** オーバーレイ (overlay)
Gentoo オフィシャルの portage tree には含まれない自作 ebuild を emerge から透過的に扱えるための仕組み。 /usr/local/portage などに /usr/portage と同じようなディレクトリ構成でパッケージを配置し /etc/make.conf で PORTDIR_OVERLAYS 変数をセットすると利用できる。
